Now we’re into the New Year, it’s time to think about revamping the home and wardrobe! That’s right, it’s the January Sales!

Hot on the heels of Christmas and New Year celebrations is a celebration of bargains! We Hearties love a good deal, so we can’t wait to see what’s discounted at our favourite stores. To help you take full advantage of the bargains and avoid any pitfalls, we’re prepared some tips for shopping in the sales…

Make a January list

Make a list of any items you currently need. Maybe you received all the gifts you wanted for Christmas – in which case, you might not feel the need to buy anything at all. That’s fine! But if you’re going shopping, make a list before you go, so you can focus on looking for the items you really need.

Set a January budget

Before heading out to the shops, set a budget so you don’t spend more than you intend. It’s easy to get carried away. Saving up for something special?… remind yourself of your saving goal – this is a good way to stop yourself from over-spending!

Compare January prices

Just because an item is on sale, it doesn’t mean it’s a good buy. Your chosen sale item might be more expensive than another similar item at full price. Always shop around to get the best bargain, regardless of the discount.

Avoid window shopping

It can be hard to resist temptation when there are so many items with discount stickers on. Avoid buying things you’re not too bothered about, just because they’re in the sale. Find you can’t resist the urge to splash the cash on unwanted items? It might be best to avoid the shops for a few weeks.

Don’t buy on impulse

Impulse purchases are a risk during sales times. If you’re tempted to throw that purple furry gilet in your shopping basket because it has a 90% discount, ask yourself if you really want it. If so, great! If not, it should go back on the shelf.

Shop online

Instead of battling through the crowds, try shopping online this January for a more relaxed experience. It’s also easier to compare prices when shopping online than when you’re physically walking around the shops.

Relax

Take time to think first before making a big purchase. The sales last for a while and prices often come down again after a week or two. Don’t get caught up in sales mania – it’s fine to relax a little.

Buy out-of-season

A great tip for buying clothes in the sales is to focus on out-of-season items. Swimwear, beach clothes, floaty dresses and shorts can all be great buys in the January Sales. Think ahead to the warmer weather and pick up discounted items ready for summer!

Check refund rights

Some shops will limit refund options during sales time. Before you make a purchase, check to see if you can return the item for a refund or at least get a credit note if you change your mind.

Look for birthday presents

The sales are a great time to look ahead for birthday presents. Have a friend with a birthday in February or March? keep your eye out for an early bargain.

By following our crafty tips, you’ll have a more successful January Sales experience packed with top value buys and no dud purchases in sight!

Good luck and have fun, Hearties!
