New Year is the perfect time to think about all the things we can do to set ourselves up for success and happiness in the year ahead.
There’s no need to make some big resolutions – no one manages to keep these up beyond February anyway! Small changes can lead to big life improvements. Check out our six ideas for improving your physical and emotional wellbeing in 2022, so you can make this your best year yet!
1. Self-care
It’s important to think about what makes you your best self. What things in your life contribute to your sense of wellbeing – and what things are detrimental to your physical and emotional health?
Self-care can be as simple as enjoying a long relaxing bubble bath, attending a yoga session, going for a long walk, taking the time to read each day or taking an extra five minutes in the morning to have a relaxed breakfast. Self-care can also include attending a therapy session, going to bed earlier or taking time to meditate.
But it’s not all about the things you actively do. Self-care can also mean saying no to doing things that don’t help your health or happiness. For example, saying no to going out if you don’t feel like it or turning down that extra work you don’t have time for. In 2022, try to make self-care a priority.
2. Get active
Being active is a great way to improve both your physical and mental health. The body and mind are so deeply connected that when we exercise, endorphins are released that make us feel good. Whatever activity floats your boat will work, whether that’s playing tennis, going to the gym, practising yoga in your living room, walking, dancing or anything that gets your heart pumping and muscles working.
Being active can be a simple thing to incorporate into your day, such as taking the stairs instead of the lift or walking instead of using the car. It’s also something you can do at home. For example, you could do an aerobics session with an online class or simply put on your favourite music and dance around your own living room.
3. Be mindful
If you find yourself feeling anxious, nervous or stressed, it’s important to take a moment to breathe and be aware of the present moment. Worrying about the future or regretting things in the past are rarely helpful activities – and can cause anxiety and stress. Try to live in the moment more often and be mindful of the simple things.
Take notice of the smell of flowers sitting in a vase, freshly brewed coffee or the fresh grass outside in the rain. Be aware of birdsong in the morning or your cat purring on your knee. Take a moment to appreciate the sunset. Pleasant sounds, smells and sights can help us find moments of relaxation throughout the day.
4. Start journaling
Writing things down can be a great way to gain a fresh perspective on the issues in your life. It’s also handy to be able to look back over events in the past few weeks and see how things have changed, including your own attitudes and emotions. Many times, the things we worry about don’t end up happening at all, or they turn out to be not so bad. Something that worries you six months ago, you might not even remember today. Journaling is also a good way to remind you of fun events, comments and jokes that can be easily forgotten and can brighten your mood on reflection.
5. Be grateful
One way to boost our mood is to remember the things we are grateful for in life. Whether it’s great friends, a loving family, a cosy home, our pets, a delicious meal, fresh flowers or the warm sunshine on a beautiful day. Focusing on what we have now, instead of the things we want, can work wonders to boost our mood. It feels good to be grateful!
6. Do more of what makes you happy
Try to fill your life with things, people and activities that make you happy. Life is too short to spend doing things that make you unhappy or being around people or in places that drain you. Try to spend more time doing those happy activities, whether that’s going for a run, spending more time with family, spending more time alone, cooking your favourite meal, going to the park to be with nature, reading, taking a bubble bath, painting. Anything that makes you smile, feel happy, hopeful and content. It can be impossible to cut out all draining people or activities entirely, but by limiting the time you spend on them, you’ll experience a boost to your overall happiness level.
7. Embrace your creative side
Doing something creative can help to boost our happiness. Whether it’s drawing, writing, knitting, sewing, DIY, crafts, playing an instrument, cooking a new recipe or learning a new dance, getting in touch with your creative side can be really therapeutic. Being creative is invigorating, helping to focus our mind, taking it away from thinking about problems or day to day events. Creative activities are also fun. When was the last time you created something? Try it today and feel refreshed!
By exploring all these ideas, we hope you can bring some more joy, happiness and contentment into your life. Here’s to a fabulous 2022!
