Rich Wilde and the Tome of Madness Slot Game Review

Rich Wilde has left the Egyptian sunshine behind, apparently deciding ancient tombs weren’t dangerous enough. Rich Wilde and the Tome of Madness from Play'n GO drops our adventurer into a Lovecraft inspired nightmare played across a 5x5 cluster grid. Cascades charge a mysterious Portal, Eye Marks introduce Special Wilds, and further progress can activate Abyss and Void effects. Charge the Portal far enough and our journey reaches the Other World Free Round, where an enormous Mega Wild may eventually join the chaos.

Theme & Graphic

Our setting trades desert temples for a dark sanctuary filled with fog, stone carvings and ominous flashes of lightning. Rich Wilde waits beside the reels looking remarkably composed for a man investigating supernatural literature with a questionable safety record. Four coloured stones occupy the lower end of the grid, while occult objects, a dagger, a ring and Cthulhu inspired imagery handle the premium symbols.

Purple, green and blue effects break through the otherwise gloomy surroundings whenever Eye Marks or Portal features activate. The soundtrack uses heavy, uneasy rhythms, while a quotation associated with H. P. Lovecraft establishes the mood before our first spin. Rich Wilde and the Tome of Madness never becomes outright gruesome, but the screen makes clear that our archaeological trip has gone somewhat off itinerary.

Payout Table

Four coloured stones form our lower paying group. The premium symbols begin with a Cthulhu mask before moving through the Golden Ring, Dagger and Cthulhu Amulet. Potential values increase with cluster size, beginning from four connected matching symbols.

Cthulhu Amulet
  • Special Wild: Special Wilds substitute for regular paying symbols and can help activate additional Portal effects when they contribute to a potential cluster.
  • Multiplier Wild: Rich Wilde appears as the Multiplier Wild. The symbol substitutes for regular icons and doubles potential payouts involving the Wild.
  • Mega Wild: The large Cthulhu creature can appear during the Other World Free Round after every Eye Mark has been opened. The Mega Wild moves down one row after each cascade while substituting for regular symbols.

Bonus Features

Cascades

Four or more matching symbols connected horizontally or vertically create a potential cluster payout. Every symbol involved disappears afterwards, allowing the icons above to drop into the empty spaces.

New symbols then enter the grid. Another qualifying cluster continues the same sequence, with cascades repeating until no further potential payout forms.

Eye Marks

Eye Marks can appear on random grid positions. Creating a potential cluster across a marked position opens the corresponding eye.

Once the current cascade sequence ends, an opened Eye Mark adds two Special Wilds to our grid. These Wilds can create further clusters and contribute towards Portal effects.

Portal

Potential cluster symbols charge the Portal meter throughout play. Collecting seven qualifying symbols adds two Special Wilds, while reaching 14 adds another pair and introduces the possibility of the Abyss Portal Effect when one of those Wilds contributes to a cluster.

At 27 collected symbols, another two Special Wilds arrive. A potential cluster involving one of them may activate the Void effect.

Rather than waiting for a separate Scatter combination, our progression grows directly from successful clusters. Among online casinos, that creates a useful connection between ordinary results and the larger feature sequence.

Abyss

Abyss becomes available after the 14 symbol Portal threshold. Activation depends on one of the Special Wilds introduced at this stage contributing to a potential cluster.

The effect changes the grid before cascades continue, potentially creating new spaces for symbols to settle and further combinations to form.

Void

Void becomes available once the Portal has collected 27 qualifying symbols and another set of Special Wilds enters the grid.

When the required Wild interaction activates Void, one random regular symbol type is selected and every matching instance is removed. Remaining icons fall into the resulting gaps, giving our cascade sequence another opportunity to continue.

Other World Free Round

Collecting 42 qualifying symbols fully charges the Portal and activates one Other World Free Round. Three random Portal Effects are prepared at the beginning.

Overcharging the Portal can increase that number. Every three qualifying symbols beyond the initial 42 add another Portal Effect, with as many as seven available.

Whenever no further potential cluster forms, one unused effect activates. Each effect also adds four Special Wilds before play continues, and the round finishes once every prepared Portal Effect has been used.

Mega Wild

The Other World Free Round begins with 11 or 12 Eye Marks scattered across our grid. Every eye must be opened by forming a qualifying cluster over its position.

Once the complete set has opened, the Mega Wild appears. The large creature moves down one row after every cascade, substituting for regular paying symbols as the sequence continues. The Mega Wild eventually leaves the bottom of the grid.

Spin Mechanics

Rich Wilde and the Tome of Madness uses five reels and five rows with cluster pays instead of paylines. At least four matching symbols must touch horizontally or vertically to produce a potential payout. Diagonal connections alone don’t qualify.

Every successful cluster starts a cascade, with matching symbols removed and replacements dropping from above. The same sequence also feeds the Portal according to the number of qualifying symbols involved. Eye Marks pay attention to specific positions, while Special Wilds can affect both cluster formation and feature activation.

Unlike conventional left to right reel setups, potential combinations can begin anywhere on our 25 position grid.

Similar Slots

A few previously reviewed online slots share either the cluster structure, horror atmosphere or Play'n GO style of meter driven progression.

  • Medusa's Madness: This is our closest mechanical comparison, using a nearly parallel system of Eye Marks, cascading clusters, gateway progression and a descending Mega Wild.
  • Le Prechaun: Cluster pays and persistent marked positions connect the two games, though Golden Squares and Position Multipliers replace supernatural portals.
  • Sanatorium Secrets: Psychological horror, transforming Wilds and feature preparation make this a suitable thematic match for readers who prefer darker reel settings.

Heart Bingo’s Opinion

Our main impression is that Rich Wilde and the Tome of Madness handles horror better than many slots that simply switch the lights off and add a skull. The fog, lightning and occult imagery create an appropriately uneasy setting, while the Portal gives every cascade a reason to matter beyond the immediate potential payout.

The feature cycle can become repetitive, particularly when Abyss or Void mainly clears the board and sends us back into another cascade. Still, the Other World Free Round gives our progression a clear destination, and opening every Eye Mark before the Mega Wild arrives creates a satisfying objective. Among online slots using charge meters, this remains one of Play'n GO's more memorable combinations of atmosphere and mechanics.
