A brave Knight, several monsters and one very large Dragon walk into a castle. That sounds like the start of a tavern joke, but Monster Quest by Big Time Gaming turns it into a Megaways slot at Heart Bingo.
This release runs on six changing reels with fantasy symbols, Wilds, bonus spins and a Hold and Spin feature where the Knight can only defeat Monsters carrying equal or lower values. The twist gives the game its identity, since not every prize sitting on the grid is immediately within reach.
Monster Quest uses a bright medieval fantasy setting rather than a grim dungeon full of fog and suspicious chanting. The main reels sit inside a grey stone castle, with towers at the sides and a green landscape behind them. Another castle appears in the distance, because apparently one fortress wasn’t enough for the local property market.
The visual style is cartoon led, with colourful Monsters, a cheerful Knight and shiny crystal symbols filling the reels. The bonus features shift the mood slightly. Hold and Spin focuses on individual reel positions and Monster values, while bonus spins keep the Knight on screen as he collects any Monster he can overpower. Animations are easy to follow, especially when the Knight moves, attacks or gathers a value. It’s not the most dramatic fantasy world we’ve seen, but it keeps the action readable and gives the monster hunting mechanic enough room to breathe.
The lower symbols are the 9, 10, J, Q, K and A card ranks, while the higher symbols are four coloured crystals. The purple crystal pays from two matching symbols, though the table below lists the requested three, four and five symbol values.
Six or more Bonus symbols trigger Hold and Spin. The Bonus symbols include the Knight, Dragon and several Monsters, each with its own value. Every reel position then spins independently and can reveal either a blank space or a Bonus symbol.
The Knight begins with three lives. A life is lost whenever a spin produces no new Monster and no Monster is defeated. If the Knight defeats a Monster, one life is restored, up to a maximum of three. The key rule is simple but nicely mean spirited. The Knight can only defeat a Monster if the Monster’s value is equal to or lower than the Knight’s current value.
That defeated Monster’s value is then added to the Knight, making higher value enemies more reachable later. The feature ends when the Knight loses all lives, all spaces fill with Monsters or the Dragon is defeated. At that point, the Knight’s total is awarded as the feature’s potential payout.
Three Scatters trigger 12 bonus spins, with two extra spins added for every Scatter beyond the third. The Knight begins the round with a random value between 8x and 15x the stake and remains on screen until the feature ends.
During the round, the Knight defeats any Monster with a value equal to or lower than his own. Regular Megaways wins also receive a separate multiplier, starting at 1x. Every Monster defeated during bonus spins increases that multiplier by 1.
If five or more Monsters appear at once, Hold and Spin activates from inside the bonus. Monsters defeated during that separate feature don’t raise the Megaways win multiplier. Three Scatters during bonus spins add four more spins, while each extra Scatter adds another two. Once the bonus spins finish, the Knight’s final value is added to the total potential result.
Monster Quest uses six Megaways reels, with each reel showing between two and seven symbols on every spin. That changing reel height creates a different number of ways each round, with the largest setup reaching 117,649 ways.
Potential wins form from left to right, beginning on the first reel. At least three matching regular symbols need to appear on consecutive reels, while higher symbol counts across those reels can increase the payout. Wilds can appear and replace regular symbols, helping build combinations where the reels cooperate for once.
Among online slots using Megaways, this one stands out less for its standard reel format and more for how the Knight collection mechanic works in the feature rounds. Regular play follows a familiar ways pattern, but the bonus structure adds a value based chase where the biggest Monster on the screen may remain untouchable until the Knight has built enough strength.
The following games share fantasy themes, Megaways reels or feature rounds built around collecting visible values.
The clever part of Monster Quest is that the Knight doesn’t simply scoop up every value sitting on the grid. That one restriction gives the Hold and Spin round a proper shape, because every smaller Monster can become a stepping stone toward something larger. It also means a huge value can sit there looking smug while the Knight is still dealing with pocket money enemies.
The general Megaways setup is familiar, and the castle theme isn’t especially daring. Still, the collection rule gives the feature rounds a stronger personality than another simple cash grab. Across online casinos, plenty of games collect visible prizes, but fewer make the collector earn the right to take them.
Our view is that Monster Quest suits players who enjoy fantasy slots, changing reel ways and bonus features with a little more tension than automatic collection.
