Who won Dancing on Ice 2022?

After ten weeks on the ice, Regan Gascoigne and his professional skating partner Karina Manta were announced as the Dancing on Ice champions for 2022 after securing the most votes (62%) from the public.

The final three celebrities – Kimberly Wyatt, Regan Gascoigne, and Brendan Cole – performed two dances each. Struggling to hold back his tears as he lifted the trophy, Regan said: ‘I am so overwhelmed. I never thought it was possible.’

In his original performance, Regan’s skate, which was inspired by the circus and Torvill and Dean’s Barnum performance from the World Championships in 1983, left judge Jayne Torvill in tears.

She told him: ‘It is great to see that again. It puts a smile on my face every time I watch it. I think it is the fact that I know how difficult some of those moves are.’

Dr Jill and Daniel King’s weekly Dancing on Ice comments:

We’ll be checking in with Daniel King and Dr Jill. We’ll be asking Daniel and Dr Jill about their favourite Dancing on Ice performances of the week and who they suspect will win the competition.

Daniel King is an ice skating coach, former 2 time Scottish Champion and British Primary champion and has represented Great Britain in several international tournaments. While Dr Jill Rose Jacobs, completed her PhD in Music focusing on Dance and Sports Science at Queen’s University, Belfast. Dr Jill was previously a professor of dance at New York University.

The celebrity contestants, Nile, The Vivienne and Joey fought to the finish on week’s Dancing On Ice finale.

Making his entrance into the rink swinging from a rope as Captain Jack Sparrow, Nile was the first celebrity to compete. The routine was a frantic mash-up of gymnastic and skating tricks deserving on an Olympic gold metal. However, Nile’s pirate costume was unsightly, bulky in a way to camouflage Nile’s athletic form.  Perhaps the costume was meant to cut the other contestants an edge? Then, at the end of Nile’s routine, he performed the first male Headbanger ever on the show. It was a bewildering choice considering Nile’s previous and career-changing neck injury. I would have not included this in choreography. Nile was well-deserving of the first perfect scores in the evening.

The Vivienne was dressed to kill in a sophisticated red skating frock, The Vivienne was framed by a team of professional male skaters as pawns on a chess set.  It could’ve been the Vivienne’s moment, but nerves got the best of her which was evident in a breath-holding, stilted skate, that lacked her characteristically glamorous style.  The Vivienne also received perfect scores — scores awarded more in appreciation for The Vivienne’s contribution to the series than for her actual performance of the evening.

Costumed as Hercules, only Joey he could have pulled off an exuberant and confident performance wearing a Roman toga. Also, Joey performed the lifts and stunts in the routine without a hesitation — a performance that placed him above the Vivienne in the competition.  Joey’s perfect score from the judges reflected the level of entertainment of his performance.

During the Bolero performances, Nile’s nerves produced uncharacteristically rigid movement in his upper body and legs. This affected the cohesively in his transitions. Nile’s chest tension also stole from emoting and affected the aesthetic of his arms. However, Nile was able to perform the routine with no mistakes in the choreography.

When the music began for Joey’s performance, his eyes locked passionately with his partner’s.  For an instant, I questioned who might win the competition. Until Joey stumbled, fudging through the dance.  Vanessa, Joey’s professional partner, verbally cued Joey as he regained composure and his footing on the ice.

Did Joey’s miss-stake give Nile the final edge in the competition?  No.  Nile simply gained dancing on ice skills beyond the other celebrities each week in the competition.

Daniel King on his favourite and least favoruite performances of the week

The Final of Dancing On Ice was spectacular. It was a great show, and dazzling performances from all the celebrities. Nile’s performance on the night just outshone Joey’s and The Vivienne’s in enjoyment and content, a very engaging pirates of the Caribbean routine and also incorporating his gymnastics background into it was great which ultimately gained him victory.

I really enjoyed the celebrities group number and all the Bolero routines. While I had suspected the Vivienne might have been a dark horse, she ended up in third place. The first, second and third places were definitely in the correct order this week and all were very well deserved. It was a hard choice for this year’s champion but I’m happy the most deserving three made it through to the final.

I did find it a bit strange how all the celebrities managed to score all 10’s even with a few stumbles from Joey and The Vivienne, however I don’t think it would have changed the overall outcome of the results as Nile’s performance was top notch this evening.
