Olly Murs discusses the inspiration for his new album “Marry Me”

Pandora Christie

Hey, it’s Pandora here from heart, and I’m here with Olly Murs to chat all things music. He’s got a brand new album out, finally! So, let’s talk about your new album. Congratulations on “marry me”,

I’m going take a wild guess. Obviously, inspiration is …

Olly Murs

Amelia. She definitely inspired it but it’s from my perspective. Anyone who knows me, knows I’m a bit of a character. It’s a bit cheeky. I’m kind of being cocky like “come on, marry me, you know I’m a catch”.

So, it’s kind of like playing on that cheeky Olly character a bit. But there would be moments when I was in the studio when I would think of Amelia in that, so there’s little nuggets of her across the album.

It was a lovely time making the album. Like having an entire album just to remember this time. In 10 years’ time, I’d like to be able to look back and go “I remember when I did that album, that was when we were getting married”.

Hopefully we’ll have kids one day, and maybe our kids can look back and go “Oh my God, that was the time that you were you know going to propose to mum”. That gives me an amazing feeling. So that’s what the album is for me. It’s a memento of where I’m at right now.

Pandora Christie

That’s lovely. You’re such a lovely guy. So, what can your fans expect from this album? Is it going to be lots and lots of lovey dovey music?

Olly Murs

Nah. Anyone that knows my music knows that it’s mostly all upbeat and fun. There are some mid tempos and a couple of slow songs. But there is only one ballad style song. It’s a heart-warming song and it’s right at the end of the album. But most of the songs are just fun songs.

There are still little nuggets of Amelia. Even in the fun upbeat songs. I wouldn’t go into the studio and say “I’m gonna write about Amelia”. There’d just be maybe a lyric or two that would remind me of her, or I think she’d like. It’s a great album. It’s not a lovely dovey album. Absolutely far from it.

If anything, the last song we wrote was the last song on the album because I felt that we needed a ballad to complete the album. It’s not just that one love song dedicated to Amelia, it’s the whole album.

Pandora Christie

Nice, does she feature anywhere?

Olly Murs

You know what? That’s a great question. And I wish you’d have asked me that six months ago when we when I was in the studio. I think it would be really fun to have had her on it. But no. I mean she’s tone deaf. She can’t sing a note, but it would have been fun to happen really.

She’s not on the album, but she’s certainly in there. I spoke to her about it, like it must be kind of overwhelming to have an album inspired by you. There’s a song I’ve not played in front of her yet, the last song. I haven’t played it yet. I’m nervous about it.

Pandora Christie asks Olly Murs about his upcoming tour

Pandora Christie

You are going to be touring aren’t you, into this year? What’s your favourite part of being on the road?

Olly Murs

You know what, the favourite part is being with the fans. It sounds like the cheesiest thing to say, but you spend so long making an album, when the moment arrives when you can finally share it to your fans is a pretty special feeling. You see 10,000 or whatever people looking back at you on stage singing the lyrics and liking the songs you’ve created. It’s pretty special, yeah.

I really love that feeling when you know everyone’s had a tough and stressful week. It gets to Friday and the audience is just there hours to enjoy themselves. That is so great about touring gigs. I’ve missed it and I can’t wait to do it again.

Pandora Christie

Well, we want you to do it and never again go away for so long.

Olly Murs

Thank you. I won’t, I’ll be here forever.

Olly Murs reveals his diva demands when he’s on and explains why JLS called him boring

Pandora Christie

We hear of performers having loads of like diva demands, like I want water that’s chilled at exactly four degrees. I need a kitten that’s speaks. What’s on your rider?

Olly Murs

Mine is actually room temperature water. That’s it.

Pandora Christie

That’s it?! What glass of water?

Olly Murs

That’s it. Genuinely. Honest to God, if you ask anyone, my rider is the most boring rider ever. I have no chocolate, sugar, I don’t have any crisps. I genuinely have nothing.

I’m the easiest artist. I just have water. As long as I’ve got good room temperature water. I might have some, like lemon and ginger tea bags and some honey. But you know, the honey needs to come from a special bee farm that’s actually in the Middle East.

I’ve got no diva demands. Actually, I have to have a bee farm with me on tour. Everywhere I go, I want that fresh bee honey. And everyone on my tour needs to grow their own lemons as well.

Nah, I am really boring. I remember going on tour with JLS and they had to do an interview to promote the tour. They were asked “what’s Olly Murs like on tour? He must be like cheeky chappie, going out every night and drinking?” The boys were like, “no, he’s the most boring artist we’ve ever worked with.”

They were saying this as compliment like they were saying “he’s so professional with what he does.” That’s true. I have this persona that I’m a bit of a cheeky chappie, living the high life but when I’m on tour, I’m straight down the middle. If I’ve got a show tomorrow, I’m off to bed early.

Olly Murs reveals to Pandora which of the Voice’s coaches he’d want to perform at his wedding

Pandora Christie

If you had to pick someone from the judges to sing at your wedding, who would it be?

Olly Murs

Sir Tom yeah. When I was growing up, my family, a lot of my family are like cockneys, all Londoners. They all love Delilah, It’s not unusual, She’s a Lady, all of Tom’s classics.

Tom would be the guy. Yeah. In fact, I haven’t even thought about it. Maybe I could get him sing at the wedding.

He’s just a legend. I’ve got to say though, Anne-Marie and Will.I.Am, all three of them can put on a show. They’re all so talented. They all would be amazing, wouldn’t it? More of a gig than. Have them all as a wedding Line-up. Yeah. I mean that would be awesome. But I know that Tom would be the one that my family would go mental for.

Pandora Christie

If you could pick any DJ in the world to DJ at your wedding, who would that be?

Olly Murs

Oh, Pandora, you know that’s you, darling. That’s not even a question.

Pandora Christie

Hahaha, thank you. But any of the bigger names in the charts?

There are some incredible DJ’s out there, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s going to be good at a wedding. Having said that, having Calvin Harris DJ at my wedding would be pretty amazing.

I’ve seen David Guetta, he was great. But I’ve seen Calvin in Vegas quite a few times. I mean, he’s got an amazing set. He has so many songs. But it’s always been you, Pandora.

Pandora Christie

I’m going to hold you to that. I’m going to be deejaying at your wedding and if you don’t ask me, I’ll just be there anyway.
