Four treasure hunting birds return in Pirots 5, and ELK Studios has apparently decided that Egypt wasn't complicated enough without parrots, traps and a pirate captain. The game starts on a 6x6 grid that can expand to 8x8, with four CollectR birds gathering matching gems and feature symbols. Gem upgrades, Transform symbols, traps, Captain Blackfeather and several bonus modes all branch from that central collection mechanic. There's quite a lot to unpack before anyone even reaches the catacombs.
Pirots 5 sends the familiar bird crew into an Egyptian adventure after their return to Earth goes rather badly. The backdrop mixes temple ruins, stone chambers, treasure and pirate details, while the four birds remain the visual focus as they travel around the grid collecting gems. Captain Blackfeather adds another character to the chaos, alongside mummies, traps and hidden catacombs.
Compared with many Egyptian themed online slots, the artwork doesn't rely entirely on pyramids and pharaohs. ELK Studios keeps the cartoon style of the wider Pirots series, with expressive birds, colourful gems and plenty of movement whenever a collector changes position. Arrows, rolling boulders, portals and rotating grid sections make feature sequences visually distinct. We also get playful music with an adventure film flavour, because apparently raiding a lost city requires a soundtrack.
Pirots 5 doesn't use conventional three, four and five symbol line payouts. Each coloured gem instead has seven potential payout levels, and upgrades can move a gem through those levels during play.
| Symbol | Payout by Gem Level, 1 to 7 |
|---|---|
| Blue Gem | 0.05, 0.10, 0.15, 0.30, 0.80, 2.50, 7.50 |
| Green Gem | 0.05, 0.15, 0.25, 0.45, 1.20, 3.75, 10.00 |
| Purple Gem | 0.10, 0.20, 0.30, 0.60, 1.60, 5.00, 15.00 |
| Red Gem | 0.10, 0.25, 0.40, 0.75, 2.00, 6.25, 25.00 |
The four birds are the engine behind Pirots 5. Each collector moves toward adjacent gems matching its own colour and can also collect feature symbols. Once a bird collects a symbol, the bird occupies that position and looks for another available target.
After every bird has run out of moves, fresh symbols fall onto the grid. Collection continues whenever a bird can move again, so one paid spin can develop into a lengthy sequence of movements and refills.
A meter above the grid tracks collected gems and Wilds. Filling that meter adds a pending feature release, with as many as three releases stored at once. When the birds stop collecting, these releases can convert random gems into feature symbols.
Each gem colour has seven payout levels. Upgrade symbols raise one colour by 1, 2 or 3 levels, while Upgrade All applies the same type of increase to all four colours simultaneously.
Those upgraded values remain important because birds receive potential payouts based on the current level of the gems they collect. The system gives the ordinary coloured symbols an evolving role rather than leaving their values fixed throughout the round.
Transform changes gems beside a collecting bird into that bird's colour. The altered cluster can create new movement opportunities because the bird may suddenly have several matching gems available.
The feature can also turn random gems into feature symbols. Super Transform repeats the process two or three times, potentially creating a much larger change across the grid.
Two neighbouring birds can perform a Switcheroo when their normal collection routes have stopped. The birds swap positions, which may create fresh paths to matching gems.
A stronger version can move one bird toward the edge of the grid or toward another collectable symbol. When at least three birds become adjacent, the Labyrinth may activate. Random rows and columns are cleared before the birds are separated along the new paths, opening more collection possibilities.
Captain Blackfeather can land during any drop. When a bird reaches a position beside him, Blackfeather takes control of that collector and inherits its current gem colour, collected feature symbols and win counter.
The affected gems become Blackfeather gems with their own potential values. Captain Blackfeather then collects those gems and available feature symbols until no more targets remain. Other birds may also fall under his control before the sequence ends.
Three trap types can interfere with the collection sequence. Arrow Shooters wait around the edge of the grid and fire once the birds stop moving. A bird struck by an arrow is removed temporarily, while its matching gems change to another colour.
Boulders roll through areas ranging from 2x2 to 4x4 and can crush gems, walls and birds. Secret Doors split the grid into four sections before rotating them, moving symbols and collectors into new positions.
Removed birds can return on later refills, so these hazards change the collection route rather than permanently reducing the number of collectors.
The Cursed Temple can activate when the entire grid is cleared during a Secret Door sequence. This feature moves the action to an 8x8 grid with a cursed treasure placed in the centre.
Birds collect nearby Coins while new symbols can reset the drop counter. Reaching the cursed treasure after a bird has exhausted its available collection path activates additional effects, including extra Coins. Captain Blackfeather and rotational mechanics can also become involved in the Cursed Temple sequence.
Portals can appear around the outside of the grid and allow birds to travel between connected areas when collectable symbols remain available. Up to four portals can be present together.
Matching corner symbols can also send birds into the Catacombs. Four coffins, gems, feature symbols and hidden mummy encounters wait inside. Successful mummy encounters produce feature symbols, while losing returns the bird to its corner. Captain Blackfeather automatically succeeds in these encounters when he controls the visiting bird.
Three collected Bonus symbols activate 5 Bonus Spins, with the grid beginning at its current number of active rows and columns. Progress from gem upgrades, collection meters, portals and grid size carries into the feature.
Collecting another Bonus symbol during the round adds an extra drop. Captain Blackfeather can also remain between spins when he hasn't yet activated.
If one of the triggering symbols is a Super Bonus, the upgraded version begins instead. A Cursed Treasure Coin Rain occurs at the start of every drop, adding another source of Coins to the grid.
Nine tokens are divided across the Cursed Temple, Kraken and City of Gold worlds, with three available in each. Tokens can appear during regular spins and most bonus sequences.
Collecting all nine permanently unlocks the Boss Castle game. The token system therefore adds progression beyond individual spins and gives the three worlds a connection outside their separate mechanics.
Pirots 5 begins on a 6x6 grid and can expand as far as 8x8. There are no traditional paylines or ways combinations. Instead, four coloured birds move around the board and collect adjacent gems matching their own colour, along with compatible feature symbols.
Fresh symbols drop once no collector has another move. This cycle can repeat whenever the refill produces new routes, making collection movement rather than reel matching the central mechanic.
Gem values can increase through upgrades, while Transform symbols alter the colour distribution of nearby gems. Switcheroo, traps, portals and feature releases can then change where the birds sit or what they can reach next. The resulting structure is considerably different from conventional online casinos slots built around fixed reels, since a single starting grid can evolve through several collection sequences before the round finally stops.
Adventure themes and busy collection mechanics give us three previously reviewed titles that sit reasonably close to Pirots 5.
Pirots 5 gives us an impressive number of moving parts, although the birds thankfully remain the centre of everything. Once we understand that most mechanics simply change what the collectors can reach, the feature list becomes much less intimidating. Gem upgrades, Transform symbols and Switcheroo are our favourite additions because they alter the collection path without pulling attention away from the main idea.
Captain Blackfeather brings some welcome mischief, while the traps stop the grid from settling into the same rhythm for too long. We do think the sheer number of named mechanics demands patience at first. Anyone wanting a simple spin and result format won't find much simplicity here. For fans of treasure adventures, persistent progression and collection driven play, though, Pirots 5 has plenty to keep track of.
